The current Corona wave continues to flatten out, and the limitation of Corona testing is also evident in the falling number of cases. On Saturday, the ministries reported “only” 12,504 new infections within 24 hours. Again, the number of deaths, 40 alone, was registered since Friday. Since the pandemic, 16,208 people infected with SARS-CoV-2 have died in Austria. There were decreases in the number of hospital patients.
The last time there were fewer new infections on January 8 with 7,407 cases – but with significantly more tests. On the following Saturday, January 15, there were already twice as many within 24 hours, with 16,749.
Further sank on Saturday also the average of the past seven days to 14.757. Austria far, there were 202.812 laboratory-confirmed active cases, around 16.205 less than on the day before. The province with the highest seven-day incidence is currently Lower Austria with 1,405.7, followed by Vienna with 1,391.9, Vorarlberg with 1,297.5 and Burgenland with 1,252.9, followed by Upper Austria (1,118), Carinthia (951.4), Salzburg (902.4), Styria (888.2) and Tyrol (678).
Hospital care was needed for 2,528 Covid 19 patients on Saturday, down 70 from Friday. Two hundred eight people are treated in intensive care units, by five more than the previous day. Within the past week, critically ill patients have decreased by 17.
Since the pandemic, there have already been 3,976,750 confirmed cases in Austria. A total of 3,757,730 people are considered to have recovered. The number of deaths is very high, with 251 Covid 19 deaths alone last week. Per 100,000 population, 180.5 people have died from or with Covid-19 since the pandemic began.
On Friday, 4,769 Corona vaccinations were administered across Austria. Of those, only 236 were first-time shots. According to E-vaccine passport data, 6,818,162 people have already received at least one vaccination. Exactly 6,185,000 people, or 68.9 percent of Austrians, have valid vaccination protection. Last week, 18,721 vaccination certificates expired.
