After the lifting of Corona restrictions, the federal capital was able to regain the top spot in the “Economist” ranking.
After lifting Corona restrictions, Vienna is once again the world’s most livable city. Austria’s capital regained the top spot for the first time since the start of the pandemic in this year’s index published Thursday by the British Economist Group. Last year, Vienna ranked only twelfth. Behind Vienna landed Copenhagen, Zurich, Calgary, Vancouver, and Geneva. These are followed by Frankfurt, Toronto, Amsterdam, Osaka, and Melbourne.
Last year, the quality of life in European metropolises dropped significantly due to the Corona crisis, while the essentially everyday life in isolated New Zealand gave Auckland first place. With the lifting of the Corona measures, metropolises in New Zealand, Australia, and China slipped again in 2022.
A total of 140 cities are compared annually for the study by the British business magazine. In 2018, Vienna became the first European metropolis to take the top spot in the “Economist Intelligence Unit Global Survey.” The survey evaluates the healthcare system, education, culture, and infrastructure. The same applies to social security, political stability, and the crime rate.
Kyiv removed from the ranking
As a result of the Russian attack on Ukraine, Moscow and St. Petersburg lost a great deal of stability and thus the quality of life, according to the analysts. The Ukrainian capital Kyiv was removed from the ranking this year.
