The variant has been detected in five countries—British health authority: No cause for concern yet.
The series of bad news surrounding Corona refuses to stop: British researchers led by virologist Thomas Peacock have now expressed concern about a new Covid variant that has emerged in several countries worldwide.
The strain, a descendant of Omikron, has been given the international classification BA.2.75 because it is a second generation of the BA.2 variant that caused a surge in Europe in late March.
While the number of cases sequenced in laboratories is low at just over 50, the true extent is likely to be much higher due to the large geographic spread.
This uncertainty and the number of different mutations compared to the parental variant have led Peacock to call the discovery “alarming.” The Imperial College London professor was also the first to discover Omicron in the sequencing gene database at the time.
In at least five countries
A spokesperson for the U.K. Department of Health said in response to a query, “The variant is known. However, it is only one of several new strains being monitored, and there is no cause for concern now.
The pathogen has spread to at least five countries, with most cases in India. Cases have also been detected in the United Kingdom (five cases), Germany, New Zealand, and Canada.
The new variant is not currently relevant to Austria. For example, the latest evaluation by molecular biologist Ulrich Elling shows that BA.5 dominates nationwide at around 70 percent, during BA.2 stagnates at approximately 15 percent.
