The Easter holiday start brings traffic jams and delays

The start of the Easter vacation next weekend will cause traffic jams and traffic delays. Not only Austria starts its Easter vacations, but also ten German states, including Bavaria, Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia. The main travel day on Austria’s roads is Saturday, according to the Ö3 traffic forecast. In addition, trade fairs are taking place in Dornbirn and Klagenfurt, which are likely to become crowd pullers, ARBÖ also expects.

For about one million students, the Easter vacations begin on Friday. The ARBÖ expects two waves of travel. Starting on Friday afternoon, traffic jams will be especially heavy on the city exits of the federal and state capitals. The traffic jam hotspot will be Vienna. The second wave of travel, which will be joined by day and weekend skiers, will roll along the transit routes in the west from early Saturday morning. In Tyrol, the Brenner freeway (A13), Fernpass road (B179), Inntal freeway (A12) and Zillertal road (B169) are considered hot spots.

From Palm Sunday to Wednesday, the Ö3 traffic editorial team expects quieter road days. The travelling wave then rolls again on Maundy Thursday, especially Good Friday, a holiday in Germany. This is when the peak in Easter travel is reached.

In Vienna, there are numerous construction sites during the Easter holiday week. At the same time, the U4 subway line is interrupted due to track work between Längenfeldgasse and Meidling stations. From April 1 (from 00:30) to April 10 (end of service), passengers in this section will have to switch to the replacement bus “U4E”.

After the busy Easter holidays, ÖBB will start urgent maintenance work on the Tauern line that cannot be postponed. From April 12 to May 17, the ÖBB Tauern Tunnel between Salzburg and Carinthia will be closed for all trains. The ÖBB Tauern lock between Böckstein and Mallnitz will also not operate during this period. There will be replacement buses between Bad Gastein and Mallnitz – the detour is 180 kilometres – and between Schwarzach-St. Veit and Bad Gastein. Long-distance trains from Klagenfurt in the direction of Salzburg will leave half an hour earlier. There will be delays of at least 30 minutes in the order of Klagenfurt.
