They are beautiful to look at but rob quite a few of their breath: flowering grasses. A survey now reveals how many people suffer from allergies.
Allergy sufferers are not to be envied: For months, they have been plagued by various plants. Now the grass also makes their eyes itch and their noses run. The drought is exacerbating the problem.
The Linz-based polling institute Imas wanted to know how many people in Austria suffer from the annoying symptoms. One thousand-eight people were questioned, representing the population aged 16 and over.
First, almost one in six (16 percent) is an allergy sufferer. And: women are affected by 20 percent, significantly more often than men (twelve percent).
Interesting detail: there is an urban-rural divide. Eighteen percent of people living in metropolitan areas are considered allergy sufferers. In the regions, it is only 13 percent.
By far, the most common problem: is hay fever. More than every second person (51 percent) has to struggle with pollen. Twenty-seven percent, in turn, are affected by house dust and dust mites. Seventeen percent have difficulties with food.
And how do allergy sufferers help themselves? Just under one in three (31 percent) tries to avoid contact with the respective triggers. In turn, 13 percent swear by relief in tablet form. For nine percent each, the hoped-for remedies are sprays and certain groups of active ingredients (antihistamines and cortisone).
To date, peanut allergy has not been treatable in young children. A new study now shows that a skin patch could change that.
The “Viaskin” product is based on a year-long immunotherapy designed to desensitize the body to the allergen. It is worn between the shoulder blades and is coated with a small amount of peanut protein.
