Citing terror threats and increased illegal migration, Italy and Slovenia are launching border controls at Schengen internal borders. The controls are to begin on Saturday, according to the governments in Rome and Ljubljana. As a result, they declared that Italy would be in charge of the borders with Slovenia, its neighbor, and then Croatia and Hungary.
From the corresponding list of the European Union, it appears that both countries initially announced the measure for ten days, or until October 30. According to politicians, Italy and Slovenia expect the control measures to last up to two months.
Because of the “aggravation of crises on Europe’s borders, especially after the attack on Israel,” concerns about terrorist attacks have grown, Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said Thursday, explaining the decision.
On Thursday, the Slovenian government gave the green light to control internal Schengen borders with Croatia and Hungary. “We do not want radical persons or persons with terrorist intentions to come through the Western Balkans route,” Interior Minister Boštjan Poklukar stressed. Earlier, Slovenian authorities had already indirectly expressed their dissatisfaction with the inadequate protection of the Schengen external border by the new Schengen country, Croatia.
