What could be better than snow on Christmas Day? The weather services are now making their first predictions about whether it could happen this year.
Christmas is less than 60 days away, and many people are already wondering: Will we get a white Christmas this time? Now we have the first answers.
Historically speaking, a “white Christmas” is rarely the case
If you look at the last few decades, you quickly conclude that you probably shouldn’t get your hopes up too high:
Bregenz, Linz, Graz and Klagenfurt have not had snow at Christmas since 2011. Salzburg last experienced snow at Christmas in 2014, and Innsbruck even in 2020.
However, depending on which region you live in, you could be in luck.
Weather services disagree: will there be snow this year or not?
As part of their long-term forecasts, various weather services have recently made initial statements about the likelihood of snow this year. The most striking thing is this:
There is relative disagreement! While the Austrian Weather Service assumes that westerly winds will cause a thaw on Christmas day (only around 30% chance of snow), the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts also expects cold but, above all, dry weather.
The American Weather Service, on the other hand, like the DWD, is predicting mild weather but is expecting a lot of rain. Either way, none of the forecasts currently sound like we can hope for a white Christmas wonderland.
