Vienna is officially in the pre-Christmas season. On Friday, Mayor Michael Ludwig and South Tyrolean Governor Arno Kompatscher ceremoniously illuminated the Christmas tree at the Christmas market on Rathausplatz.

The Christmas tree on Vienna’s Rathausplatz was illuminated on Friday after dark by Mayor Michael Ludwig and South Tyrolean Governor Arno Kompatscher.
“The lights that we are illuminating on the beautiful South Tyrolean tree today should be a sign of cohesion in our society,” Ludwig said. Instead of letting “terror and hatred divide us,” the focus should be on togetherness.
“This tree is a sign of our solidarity with Vienna and Austria,” said Kompatscher about the 28-meter-high, 115-year-old spruce.

From now on, the spruced-up Christmas tree will light up Vienna’s Christmas market on Rathausplatz. It will be open again this year until December 26.
