“Ski pleasure yes, but without après-ski”, with this short statement Austria’s chancellor Sebastian Kurz (34, ÖVP) now made clear that there will be no après-ski parties in the alpine country in the coming winter season. Due to the Corona Pandemic and the high Covid-19 infection figures in Austria, the government wants to refrain from such celebrations this year, Kurz explained in a press conference on Thursday. Winter sports should nevertheless be possible under certain hygiene regulations.

In a joint press conference with Tourism Minister Elisabeth Köstinger, the Chancellor announced the Corona rules for the 2020/21 ski season. Restaurants and huts will remain open, but there will be a seating obligation – even outside. In gondolas there is a strict distance and mask obligation, ski school groups are limited to a maximum of ten people. Free tests for ski instructors, travel companions and hotel employees are also planned.

According to Tyrol’s regional boss Günther Platter, après-ski only accounts for around three percent of the value added in winter tourism in his federal state – he welcomed the rules. Recently, the number of infections in the alpine republic had risen massively again. Since Wednesday a travel warning of the Federal Government applies for the vacation region Vorarlberg.
