Apple cider vinegar: How healthy is it, and should you drink it?

Apple cider vinegar is said to heal the skin, hair, liver, intestines, metabolism, and blood sugar, among other things. It is also said to help with weight loss. How healthy is it to drink this acidic food?

Apple cider vinegar contains many important vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and enzymes, including vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, E, beta-carotene, folic acid, potassium, magnesium, iron, sodium, calcium, phosphate, fluoride, iodine, zinc, copper, and selenium. Some of the health benefits of apple cider vinegar have been proven in studies, but research into its exact mode of action has not yet been completed.

Apple cider vinegar: how it works
As a traditional household and medicinal remedy, apple cider vinegar is said to:

have a detoxifying effect because it stimulates the liver and kidneys
fight putrefactive bacteria in the intestines
promote wound healing
make hair shiny and smooth
improve blemished, inflamed skin, reduce sebum production and relieve itching

Study: Apple cider vinegar also helps with weight loss
Some of the health benefits of apple cider vinegar have been proven in studies:

Apple cider vinegar can help lower blood sugar levels by increasing insulin sensitivity. One study found that taking apple cider vinegar before a carbohydrate-rich meal reduced the rise in blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
Apple cider vinegar can help you lose weight. According to a study, taking apple cider vinegar increases the feeling of satiety and reduces appetite, which can lead to a lower calorie intake.
It can also lower cholestrin levels. In studies, taking apple cider vinegar lowered LDL cholesterol levels (the “bad” cholesterol) and increased HDL cholesterol levels (the “good” cholesterol).

Drinking apple cider vinegar: not recommended
A sip of apple cider vinegar in warm water in the morning is a popular way to use it. Apple cider vinegar can also be used in cooking and salads. It should not be taken because the acid can damage sensitive tooth enamel. If your stomach is sensitive to acid, you can also take apple cider vinegar in capsule or tablet form; however, the liquid form is more favorable. If you are taking medication or are ill, you should only use apple cider vinegar with your doctor’s permission.

What is apple cider vinegar?
Apple cider vinegar is produced by fermenting apple juice. During fermentation, yeasts and bacteria convert the sugar in the apple juice into alcohol. The alcohol is then converted into acetic acid by acetic acid bacteria, resulting in apple cider vinegar.

Organic apple cider vinegar is made from whole apples, not apple scraps. Due to the natural fermentation process and the absence of pasteurization (brief heating), the organic version contains more valuable ingredients.
