Apple has been holding back for a long time, but now the plan is finally in place. The iPhone manufacturer will, therefore, also enter the race for smartphones with flexible displays and present such an iPhone in the foreseeable future. The basic design will be based on Samsung, the current number one in cell phones and Apple’s biggest competitor.
For many years, repeated reports have been made about Apple’s experiments with foldable iPhones. So far, none of the developments have led to a saleable device. The relatively small market has been left entirely to the Android competition. Samsung, in particular, is regarded as innovative and the leader in cell phones with flexible displays.
iPhone in Samsung’s flip design coming in two years
Now, however, Apple’s decision seems to have been made. If the claim in the report from “The Information” is true, Apple will present a corresponding iPhone in two years’ time. The project is running in Cupertino under the code “V68” and is currently being driven forward. Apple is currently actively looking for suppliers in Asia who can manufacture suitable components (source: The Information via MacRumors).
The basic shape is also no longer a secret, meaning that Apple has preferred a “clamshell” design. This is also used in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series. The cell phone is folded in the middle, protecting the main screen. There is also a smaller display on the outside for the essentials. An “iPhone Flip” is likely to have a similar design.
Until now, Apple has struggled with smartphones of this kind, with the visible crease in the middle of the screen being a particular headache for engineers. However, Apple has apparently now found a solution to the problem or is well on the way to doing so, as the company is aiming to launch the device as early as 2026.
Apple vs. Samsung: the battle of the flip phones
Apple probably wants to launch an almost perfect device on the market in any case. On the other hand, customers have accompanied the manufacturer on its journey from the very beginning. The Koreans unveiled the first generation of the Galaxy Z Flip over four years ago. A few days ago, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 celebrated its premiere. This is the fifth generation, contrary to what the name suggests. The explanation: is that there was never a Galaxy Z Flip 2; Samsung simply skipped the number to be able to present both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and a matching Z Flip 3 in 2021.
Since then, Samsung has released a new model every year. If Samsung remains true to its nomenclature, the “iPhone Flip” is likely to face the Galaxy Z Flip 8 in 2026. Korea is alarmed and will probably do everything possible to win the battle.
