Subway lines in Vienna: U4, U6, U3 and U2 restricted until Wednesday

Due to the continuous rain, the operation of the subway lines U2, U3, U4 and U6 has been partially suspended. The reason is the water level of the Wien River. Wiener Linien does not expect regular service to resume until Wednesday.
According to Wiener Linien, the situation remains tense and a drop in the water level is not yet in sight. As soon as the water level begins to fall, work can begin on dismantling the flood protection measures, which can take up to twelve hours. Regular operations are therefore not expected before Wednesday.

Subway lines protected with sandbags
On Sunday night, the water level of the Vienna River reached a critical record high at the Kennedy Bridge. In the meantime, the water has also risen too high on the Danube Canal. Wiener Linien therefore had to take extensive protective measures on various subway lines. The affected subway lines were protected from the ingressing water with dam beams and sandbags.
Severe restrictions
The U4 can only run between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke; the U6 will continue to run between Floridsdorf and Westbahnhof, as well as Meidling station and Siebenhirten. The U3 has to be discontinued between Rochusgasse and Simmering.
Due to flooding, the U2 line is currently only running between Seestadt and Taborstraße. The Schottenring station on the Danube Canal and the Schottentor/Universität station will not be served. Wiener Linien recommends taking streetcar lines 1 and 71.

A replacement bus service has been set up on the U4 line between Hütteldorf and Karlsplatz stations. The stops can be found in the WienMobil app under “Betriebsinfo” – “geplant” – “U4 Hochwasser”. In addition, streetcar line D is still available between Heiligenstadt and Karlsplatz. As a replacement for the U6, streetcar line 62 has been extended – until further notice, it will run on the route Lainz – Meidling station and the subway stations Margaretengürtel – Westbahnhof – Burggasse.
Disruption also possible on Monday
According to Wiener Linien, there is currently no end to the disruption in sight. Depending on how the situation develops, there may be further restrictions on Wiener Linien operations. An end to the disruption is not yet foreseeable. There may still be restrictions on Monday. Wiener Linien, therefore, asks passengers to allow for longer travel times.
Construction work had to be stopped
In addition, the tunnel excavation work at the U2 Pilgramgasse construction site had to be stopped due to the critical water level; all workers left the construction site in an orderly fashion. The impact of the flooding on other Wiener Linien construction sites is not yet foreseeable. However, further effects are to be expected.
