Almost all countries in Europe have the same problem: record levels of new corona infections. The situation has become more acute in the Czech Republic and Poland.

“It is possible that we are seeing more than 10,000 new cases per day and that the virus is spreading uncontrollably,” the head of the German Robert Koch Institute drew a worrying picture for Germany. There were 4000 new cases among our neighbors on Thursday – 1000 more than the day before. The measures: Anyone coming from a risk area within Germany (e.g. Berlin) may no longer be accommodated without a Covid test. In addition, in some federal states there are guest lists in the gastronomy, personal limits for private parties and compulsory masks.

For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, Italy has fewer new infections (3678) than Germany. Nevertheless, the state of emergency was extended until the end of January 2021 and an outdoor mask requirement was introduced. Those who violate it must expect fines of between 400 and 1000 euros.

With 18,746 new cases, France is the Corona leader in Europe. In Paris and Marseille, “maximum alert level” applies: bars and cafés had to close, Parisian restaurants are only allowed to open under strict hygiene rules.

Czech Republic: From model student to problem child
With 10.7 million inhabitants, the Czech Republic has a population hardly larger than Austria – but almost five times as many new infections (5335). Measures should have come into force as early as August – Prime Minister Andrej Babis postponed them due to elections. Now the state of emergency applies, a new lockdown is imminent. Restrictive measures are to be presented on Friday.

Belgium interferes in the private lives of its citizens
Belgium: In the fight against the pandemic, Belgium intervenes in private life. Each month, only “three close contacts without mask and distance” are to be maintained. Private meetings in one own home are allowed with a maximum of four people – provided they wear a mask or keep a safe distance. Bars and cafés are closed at 11 pm nationwide, and in Brussels they are closed.

Spanish court overturns Madrid’s blockade
In Spain, however, the court in Madrid lifted the partial shutdown of the Spanish capital and nine other towns in the region. Because of the rising number of infections, the central government ordered that the inhabitants of the Madrid metropolitan area may only leave their homes with good reason. The regional government filed a complaint against this.

In Switzerland and Liechtenstein, 1172 new cases were reported to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) on Thursday – the fact that the numbers are rising above 1000 had not occurred here since April 1. Meanwhile, Denmark extended its measures against the pandemic despite slightly improved figures.

Poland introduces general mask obligation in public
In the fight against the rapidly increasing number of corona infections, Poland is again introducing a general obligation to wear masks in public on Saturday. Then the entire country will be classified as a so-called yellow zone. So far, there are 51 local yellow and red zones in Poland with increased or strongly increased infection incidence.
Previously, the number of new corona infections in Poland had reached a record level. 4280 new infections were reported within 24 hours. In the same period 76 people died in connection with the virus – more than ever before. According to official figures, 111,599 people have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Poland to date, and 2867 have died.
