How often should you change your bed linen? This question is on many people’s minds, as bed linen is a fundamental part of our daily lives.
Studies show that sweat, dander, grease and dirt accumulate in sheets and covers over time, providing an ideal environment for mites and bacteria.
But how often should bed linen actually be changed? According to a GfK survey, 41 percent of Germans change their bed linen every two weeks, and 18 percent even weekly. However, a full six percent of respondents wait up to three months or longer.
According to Focus Online , doctors recommend washing bed linen at least once a week to minimize the accumulation of germs and mites.
People with allergies, asthma or skin problems should pay particular attention to cleaning.
Dermatologist Dr. Annie Gonzalez explains that in addition to sweat and dirt, dander also accumulates in bed linen, which provides food for house dust mites.
Weekly changes are particularly important if the mattress is not covered, as this forms a protective layer that prevents dirt and liquids from penetrating the mattress.
Experts also recommend more frequent cleaning of bed linen for people who perspire heavily at night, sleep naked or take pets to bed with them.
Studies also show that up to 10,000 mites can be found in pillows and blankets after just one year.
In addition to mites, bacteria and fungi can also accumulate in the bed linen, which can cause health problems, especially in immunocompromised people and small children
