On Saturday, the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) once again warned about an email scam circulating: criminals are trying to obtain people’s personal data by sending messages in the ministry’s name.
Specifically, potential victims are led to believe that they will receive a 500-euro refund but will have to disclose their credit card details to do so. Links then lead to fake websites in the FinanzOnline style.
The ministry stated that the e-mails with the subject “The processing of your refund has begun” are fake. It also said the requests to enter account information on portals modelled on FinanzOnline are phishing.
Appeal to the public
According to the ministry, information from the tax authorities is generally provided in the form of notices and is sent by post or to the FinanzOnline databox. “The BMF never asks citizens to provide personal data such as passwords, credit card details, or account information,” it said.
The authorities appealed to the public not to follow the requests in such emails under any circumstances, never to click on such links, and never to disclose personal data such as passwords, credit card details, or account information. “The BMF recommends deleting such emails immediately,” it said.
