A turnaround is imminent that could fundamentally change the previous winter weather. What scenarios await us now?
High Beate on the home straight
High Beate has settled over Europe, shaping the weather for days. The stable high-pressure conditions will bring mostly sunshine again starting tomorrow, but also icy temperatures and strong winds will make many places feel cold. Especially in the morning hours, temperatures often reach lows well below freezing. While many enjoy the clear days, the frosty nights and slippery roads are challenging.

January 25 is the decisive date
The weather forecasts indicate a decisive change in the general weather situation around January 25. This could decide whether the stable high-pressure area Beate will be replaced.

Two possible scenarios are emerging:
– Intrusion of cold polar air: Cold air masses from the north could flow into Europe. This scenario would be accompanied by heavy snowfall and even colder temperatures. Road traffic, in particular, would be affected by icy conditions and snow chaos. Winter equipment would be essential in many regions.
Influence of mild Atlantic air: Should the milder air from the Atlantic prevail, rain, thawing, and gray, gloomy weather would result. This development would end the wintry mood but, at the same time, could bring relief to regions struggling with extremely icy conditions.

Wind as an uncertain component
Wind conditions could also change with the change in weather. Icy gusts are causing temperatures to feel even colder than the measured values. If cold polar air dominates, the winds could persist or even increase. On the other hand, mild Atlantic air would be more likely to bring gale-force rain winds, which would also make staying outdoors unpleasant.

Effects of both scenarios
The possible change in weather could have far-reaching consequences. Traffic will remain a challenge in regions with heavy ice or snowfall. Mild temperatures would be a relief for many but could lead to the risk of avalanches due to thawing snow at higher altitudes. Timely preparation is particularly important: winter tires, road salt, and warm clothing remain essential for many regions. At the same time, umbrellas and waterproof clothing should be kept on hand for scenarios with Atlantic air.

Worrisome climate patterns
The stable high Beate also gives cause to reflect on global climate patterns. In recent years, high-pressure systems that last for weeks have become more frequent. Scientists are discussing whether this indicates long-term changes in the climate system. A dry, cold winter or a phase of heavy rainfall could impact agriculture, the economy, and infrastructure.
