From April, tourist trips to England, Scotland or Wales will require registration for a fee.

The USA and Canada led the way, and now the UK follows suit: From 2 April, tourists from EU countries, including Austria, will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) and a valid passport.
Registration must be carried out separately for each individual traveler (including children), regardless of the type of entry (flight, ferry, etc.). Only travelers who change planes in the UK and do not leave the airport’s transit area do not need an ETA.

Since Wednesday (5 March), applications can only be made online via the government portal. The British Home Office recommends using a specially developed app (available on the App Store, available on Google Play).

Personal data must be entered, and security questions about the trip must be answered. A credit card is required to pay an estimated processing fee of 10 pounds (approx. 11.80 euros).

Applications should be officially processed within 72 hours, and approval will then be sent by email. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you register well in advance.

A successfully applied-for ETA is generally valid for two years and can be used for multiple trips to England, Scotland, or Wales. Whether an ETA will also be required for Northern Ireland remains to be seen.
