The Südosttangente is Austria’s busiest road, with around 230,000 vehicles per day between the Prater junction and Handelskai. Renovation is planned in both directions, with all lanes remaining open, according to Asfinag-
How Vienna will change by 2035
The preparatory work was already carried out last year, and the central reservation crossings were installed. From 17 March 2025, the main construction work will start in the northbound direction. In the southbound direction, the emergency lane will be used as an additional lane, and traffic will be shifted to the right. This will create an additional lane that will be used for two-way traffic—a so-called trough lane.
Color coding concept to make it easier to choose the correct lane during the renovation of the south-east bypass
A color-coding system is intended to make orientation easier: Those who want to exit at Handelskai, for example, must keep to the right, while the trough lane can also be used for all other directions, according to Asfinag regional manager Brigitte Müllneritsch. The roadworks in the northbound direction will be carried out in three phases. The roadworks will be on the far right in the first construction phase, which will last ten weeks. It will then “move” to the middle for two weeks: During this traffic phase, the Handelskai exit will be closed to vehicles coming from the A23 and driving in the three left-hand lanes. The roadworks will be on the far left for one week in the final phase. The three lanes on this side will then pass the roadworks on the right.
Completion of the renovation of the south-east bypass in August 2026
During the construction site, the so-called bypass ramp in the direction of Handelskai at the Prater junction will be closed—but the exit towards the city center will remain open. After completion of the work, the construction site will be carried out in the same sequence from 23 June in the southbound direction. After a winter break from October 2025 to March 2026, the two junctions at Prater and Handelskai will be renovated from March 2026. The measures are expected to be completed by the end of August 2026.
