In response to special tariffs on steel and aluminum already imposed by the US, the European Commission is planning counter-tariffs of 25 percent on numerous US products. This was revealed in a document seen by the Reuters news agency on Monday. Some duties will be levied from 16 May, others from 1 December. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has declared that the EU will have to buy energy from the US.

The products are wide-ranging, including diamonds, eggs, dental floss, sausages, poultry, and later, almonds and soybeans. Initially, tariffs on bourbon whiskey, wine, and dairy products were also considered. The tariff on bourbon was to be 50 percent.

Trump then threatened a 200 percent tariff on alcoholic beverages from the EU, which would have hit France and Italy in particular. The EU member states are to vote on this on 9 April.

Trump: EU will have to buy energy from us

Trump also stated that the EU must buy energy from the USA. This will focus on his efforts to eliminate the EU’s trade deficit. In the White House, Trump accused European countries of not buying enough US goods.

“They’re going to have to buy their energy from us because they need it, and they’re going to have to buy it from us. They can buy it, and we can make up 350 billion dollars weekly.”
