As a sign of mourning over Pope Francis’s death, bells will ring throughout Austria on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. to coincide with the start of the funeral celebrations for the head of the Church in the Vatican. This was announced by the Secretary General of the Bishops’ Conference, Peter Schipka, to the Kathpress news agency on Thursday. Austria’s largest bell, the Pummerin at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, will ring for ten minutes.
Since the Pope’s death, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, like other churches in the country, has been draped in black flags. There, the Catholic Church in Austria will bid farewell to Francis with a requiem on Monday afternoon (6 p.m.). Archbishop Franz Lackner, Chairman of the Bishops’ Conference, has been invited to preside over the service with the Austrian bishops and will also preach. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and his wife, Doris Schmidauer, have already confirmed attendance.

All the faithful are invited to the requiem, the Republic’s political representatives, the Ecumenical Council of Churches in Austria, and the legally recognized religious societies. Members of the diplomatic corps will also attend the service in St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
