Elections will be held in the federal capital, Vienna, on Sunday. Around 1.4 million people are being called upon to decide on the future composition of the municipal council, state parliament, and district councils. The election was initially scheduled to take place in the fall. However, the governing parties, SPÖ and NEOS, decided to bring it forward in January. The polling stations are open from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm.

There were almost no losers in the 2020 election. The SPÖ achieved 41.6 percent (up two percentage points). Its coalition partner at the time, the Greens, gained around three percentage points to 14.8%. The ÖVP climbed by 11 percentage points to 20.4%. The NEOS achieved 7.5 percent, an increase of 1.3 percentage points. The FPÖ, on the other hand, lost 23.7 percentage points. It came last with 7 percent.

A total of 100 seats are up for grabs in the city parliament. However, not only will a new municipal council and state parliament be elected, but also the 23 district councils will be elected. In contrast to the municipal council elections, EU citizens can also go to the polls.
