Growth is particularly dynamic in countries such as South Korea, where the proportion of Catholics in the total population is over 11 percent, and in the Philippines, where Catholic Christianity is deeply rooted.

Social and cultural significance

Asian Catholics are often an active and visible minority in their countries. They are heavily involved in social, cultural, and charitable activities and thus have a disproportionate influence on the societies in which they live.
Despite their minority position, they can have a far-reaching impact on society through educational work, healthcare, and social services. This makes them essential actors in interreligious and social dialog.

Political and strategic relevance for the universal church

Asia is becoming increasingly important for the Vatican and the Catholic world church because the future of Catholicism is being decided here. Without a strong presence in Asia, the Church is threatened with marginalization on a global level.
Pope Francis has specifically appointed Asian cardinals and intensified relations with Asian countries, especially China. The rapprochement with Beijing and the agreement on the appointment of bishops show how much the Vatican relies on Asia to remain globally relevant.
In the Catholic diaspora, for example, in the USA, the proportion of Asian Catholics is also growing, which is changing and rejuvenating the ethnic and cultural composition of the global church.

Challenges and opportunities

Asian Catholics face considerable challenges: religious discrimination, state repression (e.g., in China and Vietnam), the threat of fundamentalist movements (e.g., in Indonesia, Pakistan, or India), and the legacy of the colonial era, which often stigmatizes them as “foreign.”
Nevertheless, Catholic life in Asia is diverse and on the move. The Church is developing from mission churches to independent local churches with local bishops and clergy.
