In light of the recent escalation in the Middle East, Pope Leo XIV has called for responsibility and reason. “Every member of the international community has a moral responsibility: to stop the tragedy of war before it becomes an irreparable abyss,” Leo XIV said on Sunday in St. Peter’s Square, according to Kathpress. He also warned that the daily suffering of the population, especially in Gaza and elsewhere, could be forgotten.
However, he said, the call for responsibility and reason must not be drowned out by the noise of weapons and rhetoric that incite conflict. “War does not solve problems, but exacerbates them and leaves deep wounds in the history of peoples that take generations to heal,” the head of the Roman Catholic Church continued. No military victory can make up for the pain of mothers, the fear of children, or the stolen future. “Diplomacy must silence the weapons; nations must shape their future with works of peace, not with violence and bloody conflicts,” the Pope demanded.
