At the end of June, 23,361 parking permits will lose their validity throughout Vienna, and a further 14,185 will be added by the end of July. In total, around 38,000 parking permits in Vienna will be affected by the need for renewal in the summer months of June and July. There are currently around 400,000 parking permits in circulation in Vienna.
Reminder letter from the City of Vienna on the expiry of parking permits
To remind citizens in good time to renew their parking stickers, the City of Vienna sends out reminder letters by post or email approximately two months before the sticker expires, along with the necessary payment information for one or two years. This letter is a voluntary, non-binding service provided by the City of Vienna and is only sent out if consent to data matching has been given. The requirements (e.g., vehicle registration and primary residence) remain unchanged. For the June series of expiring parking stickers, 19,548 reminders were sent out at the end of April (by e-mail) and the beginning of May (by post). Of the June parking permits, 15,808 have already been applied for and paid for. 7,553 are still outstanding, with new applications and payments being received regularly.
In this context, it is essential to pay on time, as otherwise, the new fees prescribed by the federal government, effective July 1, 2025, will apply, the City of Vienna reminds. Experience shows that the confirmation and crediting of a payment can vary in speed depending on the bank and often takes longer. Relying on the fact that a booking only takes a few hours can lead to those affected having to pay the difference in application fees, especially in the case of last-minute payments.
Expiry of parking stickers: The Federal government increases application fees from July 1
What is the amount that will need to be paid from July 1, 2025? The new application fees will be raised by the federal government from EUR 14.30 to EUR 21 from July 1, which corresponds to an increase of EUR 6.70. If the application is submitted with the E-ID, the federal fee will be EUR 13.00 in the future (instead of EUR 8.60 previously), which means a difference of EUR 4.40. The increase in application fees came as a surprise to the City of Vienna and was not coordinated with the provinces and municipalities. For this reason, the reminder letters from the City of Vienna for parking stickers expiring in June and July do not yet include any new or increased application fees.
Specifically, the reminder letters for the parking permits that expire at the end of July were sent out at the end of May and beginning of June, i.e., still with the old fee. Immediately afterwards, the federal government announced the increase in application fees. Currently, 4,047 people have paid for their parking sticker, which expires at the end of July, using the old application fee; 10,138 payments are still outstanding. The increased application fee will be charged from July. By the way, as soon as it became known, the City of Vienna pointed out the increase in federal fees on the official helpers’ website under “Costs and payment.”
Tip from the city: To avoid the increased federal fees, citizens should apply for and pay for their new parking permit on time before July 1, 2025. The payment must be credited to the City of Vienna’s account in June. Anyone who pays for the parking sticker after July 1 using the old fees will receive an additional claim from the city for the outstanding difference. To avoid any misunderstandings, the Vienna parking meter fee remains unchanged, but the federal fees for applications are increasing. Payment of the parking sticker is possible either via the City of Vienna’s payment service or by instant bank transfer, stating the payment reference to ensure immediate booking.
