Remitly, a financial services company, has conducted research on the world’s most humorous country for people under 30.
How humorous is a nation, and how does this manifest itself in everyday life? The digital financial services provider Remitly has now investigated these questions and surveyed 6,000 people from 31 countries. According to the survey, Austria ranks 15th, in the middle of the pack.
It is striking that no single country comes close to the total score of 112. This means that people everywhere could use humor even more, for example, when dealing with unpleasant situations and building social relationships.
The Czech Republic takes first place with 72.3 points. This is attributed to “self-destructive humor, razor-sharp irony, and skillfully employed ”subtle humor” that can catch you off guard, according to the press release. Portugal ranks second (71.4 points), where warmth is combined with quick-wittedness. Ireland comes in third (71.2), followed by Belgium, Chile, and Greece.
Austrians more humorous than Germans
Austria ranked 15th in the survey, directly behind Mexico and ahead of Estonia. Germany ranks 27th overall. According to Remitly, this has to do with the fact that the humor of our neighbors is often described as dry, direct, or difficult to understand.
According to the study, people in Italy, the US, and the Philippines are even less humorous than Germans. “Humor is often the first bridge between people, especially in a new country or culture. It helps break the ice, build trust, and create important moments of connection where we feel seen and understood (…),” it says.
To arrive at the results, the Humour Styles Questionnaire was used, which assesses four dimensions related to individual differences in the use of humor. In the future, people in other countries will also be subject to testing.
