Three vaccinations against the coronavirus are about to be approved and the first doses could be administered in a few weeks. Countries around Austria are using this outlook to prepare themselves. Spain is defining 13,000 vaccination stations, Germany is securing millions of doses, Italy is deciding who will be vaccinated first. The goal: to get started in a structured manner as soon as the vaccine is available.

Great Britain: Mass vaccinations could start in Great Britain in just one week. This is reported by British media with reference to government circles. In the coming days, the corona vaccine of the German biotech company Biontech and the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer is to be approved on the island. The National Health Service (NHS) has been instructed to be ready for administration from December 1. The British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca is also in talks with the authorities.

Italy: As one of the most severely affected EU countries (50,000 corona deaths), Italy announced the start of a major vaccination campaign. According to Health Minister Roberto Speranza, vaccine doses for 1.7 million citizens are to be available by the end of January. Priority will be given to people in the health sector and senior citizens. A voluntary mass vaccination will then follow in the spring. There is great skepticism among Italians: in a survey, only 16 percent said they wanted to be vaccinated against Covid-19, 42 percent still want to wait and see.

Germany: German Health Minister Jens Spahn expects vaccinations against corona this year. The government has already secured 300 million doses of vaccine and vaccination centers are being planned. “Even with two doses per vaccination, we would still have enough for our population and could share it with other countries,” said Spahn. He expects the population to be vaccinated before the end of 2021. With the flu vaccination, for example, it is estimated that up to 20 million people could be vaccinated in a few weeks.

Spain: Together with Germany, Spain wants to be the first EU country to introduce corona vaccination. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced 13,000 vaccination stations nationwide. On Tuesday he wants to present a fully developed national vaccination plan for his country. The EU has already secured a total of 1.2 billion vaccine doses, of which Spain is entitled to ten percent. It is expected that by mid 2021, around 70 percent of Spain’s 47 million citizens will be vaccinated. The vaccination is to be free of charge.

Russia: In August, Russia was the first country in the world to approve a corona vaccine. This attracted criticism from experts, because “Sputnik V” had only been tested on humans for less than two months. Before the start of the study, Russia had already vaccinated 10,000 people from high-risk groups with “Sputnik V”. It is not yet in general circulation and mass vaccinations are to start by the end of the year. With “EpiVacCorona”, a second agent against corona was approved in October.

China: China began with test vaccinations in July, and almost one million Chinese are now reported to have been vaccinated, including government officials, foreign students and employees with foreign contacts. They are not official participants in the clinical trials, but are reportedly volunteers. Four corona vaccines are currently in the final clinical trial phase in China. According to the manufacturer Sinopharm, there are no findings about serious side effects of the experimental active ingredient to date.
