The Lockdown is responsible for the fact that in several provinces in Austria at present substantially more garbage is produced. Because of the on-line trade there is a third more cardboard boxes. The lockdown also means that more bulky waste is being disposed. This causes additional costs.
In Lienz in East Tyrol there are 60 garbage collection posts which overflow these days again and again. It is because of the bulky cardboard waste that causes a 30 percent increase in waste. According to Gerlinde Küberl, chairwoman of the Lienz environmental committee, online trade is responsible for this: “You can tell from the labels that people are increasingly ordering online. Cardboard packaging is showing the strongest increase.
Also the bulky waste has increased by a third in this lockdown, according to Roland Mitteregger from the waste collection center in Lienz: “Because people are at home an insane amount of time and finally have time to finally dispose their garbage. We used to employ between 50 and 60 people, but now we need between 80 and 100 people to cope with the workload.
411 tons of cardboard boxes and 227 tons of bulky waste accumulate annually in Lienz. The 30 percent increase in waste causes accordingly additional costs, Gerlinde Küberl reckons: “We are now just in the budget preparation phase and have to think about an increase in fees. Because somebody must pay at the end of the day. Even if the garbage islands are free, someone must pay for the additional expenditure. The chairwoman of the Lienz environmental committee appealed to the population to buy regionally. The domestic economy would produce less cardboard boxes, Gerlinde Küberl said.
