German health departments have reported 26,391 new Corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day. In addition, 1070 new deaths were recorded within 24 hours, the RKI announced early Thursday. The peak of 1129 new deaths had been reached on Dec. 30. In terms of registered new infections, the highest figure of 33,777 had been reported on December 18 – but this included 3500 subsequent reports.
An interpretation of the data remains difficult, because around Christmas and the turn of the year Corona cases were discovered, seized and transmitted according to RKI with delay. The RKI assumes that the reporting data on the incidence of infection will be reliable again at the end of next week/beginning of the week after next at the earliest.
The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants reported to health authorities within seven days (seven-day incidence) was 121.8 early Thursday morning, having reached its previous high of 197.6 on December 22. However, the differences between the federal states are enormous: Sachsen had the highest incidence with 269.8 and Thüringen with 232.4. Bremen had the lowest value with 74.0. However, due to the holidays, the weekly values should also be evaluated with caution.
