In Spain, the number of new infections has risen to a high of 84,287 in one weekend. From Friday to Monday, 455 people died at the same time of or with Corona, the Ministry of Health in Madrid further announced on Monday evening. On the weekend before still 61,422 infections and 401 fatalities had been counted. The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days rose to nearly 380.
Because of the numbers, which had already been rising for weeks, the starting times of the nightly curfews were also brought forward to 10 p.m., where they had not already been. However, the government in Madrid rejects a return to round-the-clock curfews as in the first Corona wave in the spring.
Different rules apply across the country, as each community can decide this for itself within a set framework. Restaurants are mostly allowed either to sell only outside or to serve only outside. Many fitness clubs are closed, and theaters, concert halls and cinemas are only allowed to fill a fraction of their seats, if at all.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 2.33 million corona infections have been reported in Spain, which has been particularly hard hit, out of a population of 47 million.
