On Monday, a decision will be made on a possible extension of the lockdown or any relaxation from February 8. Monday afternoon, the state governors will be guests at the Chancellor’s Office, and experts are also expected to attend the meeting. Some state leaders spoke out in advance in favor of openings in the areas of schools and commerce.
February 8 had been mentioned in mid-January during the extension of the current lockdown as the earliest date from which trade, hairdressing salons and museums, but also face-to-face teaching at schools could start again.
In any case, there is a desire from the federal states for certain opening steps. Tyrol’s governor Günther Platter (ÖVP) had only this week spoken out in favor of a discussion on opening up trade and schools, also against the background that the mood in the population is “tilting”. Vienna’s mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) also recently tended toward cautious unlocking with concrete regulations, “especially for kindergartens and schools, but also for parts of the retail sector.”
Leonhard Schneemann (SPÖ), the regional councillor for Burgenland, who will attend Monday’s meeting in the Chancellor’s Office as a substitute for Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ), also advocated a rapid opening of schools and commerce, and, “Not only that, I will also argue for a safe and gradual opening of accommodation establishments,” as soon as the infected numbers allow a gradual easing, Schneemann explained.
