Starting next Monday, free rapid antigen tests for SARS-CoV-2 will be available in the first “pilot pharmacies.” This was announced by the President of the Chamber of Pharmacists, Ulrike Mursch-Edlmayr, on Friday. The list of participating pharmacies – the offer is to be continuously expanded – will be available on the Chamber of Pharmacists’ website starting next Monday. As Mursch-Edlmayr explained, 20 percent of pharmacies currently offer rapid tests, which previously had to be paid for.

In the future, these will be available free of charge, although registration will be required. “The framework for the registration process still requires a redesign of the software tool,” Mursch-Edlmayr said. However, first pharmacies will already be processing free tests on Monday and issuing the written test results then required for the use of hairdressers and body-related service providers, Mursch-Edlmayr guaranteed: “We will do our best and possible.”

The Pensioners’ Association of Austria (PVÖ) and the Seniors’ Association welcomed the move. “The free Coronatests in pharmacies help senior citizens in particular to be able to participate more actively in public life again. I am glad that the many talks and negotiations have paid off,” Seniorenbund President Ingrid Korosec said in a statement.
