German health departments have reported 8072 new Corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day. In addition, 813 new deaths were recorded within 24 hours, according to figures released by the RKI on Wednesday. These current figures should also include 600 follow-up reports of new infections from North Rhine-Westphalia, which had been missing the previous day, according to the RKI. Exactly a week ago, the RKI had recorded 9705 new infections and 975 new deaths within 24 hours.
The peak of 1244 new reported deaths had been reached on January 14. The highest number of new infections registered within 24 hours, 33,777, was reported on December 18, but included 3,500 subsequent reports.
The number of new infections reported within seven days per 100,000 inhabitants (seven-day incidence) was 68 on Wednesday morning, according to the RKI. Its previous high had been reached on December 22 with 197.6. Most states continue to see declining seven-day incidences, according to the RKI.
The RKI counted 2,299,996 confirmed infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the pandemic began. The actual total number is likely to be much higher, as many infections go undetected. The total number of people who died from or with the involvement of a confirmed infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 62,969. The RKI gave the number of those who recovered as approximately 2,073,100.
