Visits to the swimming pool and gym, meeting friends for a beer – what people in Austria, as in many European countries, can currently only dream of, is once again a reality in Iceland. Together with the Vatican, the country in the far north has the lowest incidence rate in Europe.

In the past three weeks, the non-EU country of Iceland was the only European country that the EU’s disease control agency ECDC listed in the “green” category. That means, according to ECDC, there is no need for EU countries to require a negative Corona test or even a quarantine period for entries from Iceland.

As early as mid-November, Iceland began gradually easing Corona restrictions because of falling case numbers. Public swimming pools have been open again since December, and gyms since January. In the past two weeks, only a handful of new Corona infections have been registered within the country. In addition, there have been about 20 cases of Corona infection among inbound travelers. The infection figures in Iceland are the lowest they have been for five months.
