Coronavirus new infections in Austria continue to rise. On Wednesday, the Interior and Health Ministries reported 1,735 new cases. On average, 1,473 people thus became infected with SARS-CoV-2 every day last week. In addition, 30 more deaths have been registered since Tuesday. Thus, 8,290 people across Austria have already died from or with Covid-19 since the pandemic began. More patients also require intensive medical care.
The last time there were this many new infections in Austria was just under four weeks ago. 2,088 were reported on January 22, followed by 1,626 on January 23. The last time there were fewer than 1,000 new cases per day was in October. 923 new infections were registered on October 6 – more than four months ago. The seven-day incidence per 100,000 population rose to 115.9 on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, 1,352 infected people had to be treated in hospitals, 24 fewer than on Tuesday. However, the number of intensive care patients increased. 264 Covid 19 sufferers needed intensive care, up by six from the previous day. Thus, only three fewer patients were in intensive care units in one week.
The 1,735 new infections were offset by a significantly lower number of newly recovered patients on Wednesday, at 1,313. 14,363 people were actively infected throughout Austria – 392 more than the previous day. Since the start of the pandemic, 437,874 Austrians have already tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. 415,221 have survived infection.
Within the past week, authorities recorded 176 covid-19 deaths. Per 100,000 population, 93.1 people have already died from or with Covid-19.
On Wednesday, Vienna again had the most new infections, with 399, while Lower Austria had 344 and Styria 286. Upper Austria reported 197 new cases, Carinthia 151 and Salzburg 143. Tyrol added 117 infected people and Vorarlberg and Burgenland 49 each.
