For the first time in nearly five weeks, more than 2,000 new infections have been reported in Austria. According to the Interior and Health Ministries, 2,006 new cases were added in the past 24 hours – two and a half weeks after the relaxations. On average over the past week, 1,786 people were thus infected with SARS-CoV-2 every day. The last time more than 2,000 were registered was on January 22, with 2,088 infections.

On Monday, the government will decide on further measures and relief. The gastronomy industry hopes for first opening steps already from March 15. For Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) tightenings are then inevitable, “if very strong uncontrolled increases would show for the next few weeks,” he said in an APA interview.

Last week, a total of 12,503 people were confirmed to have been infected with coronavirus. The seven-day incidence per 100,000 population rose to 140.5 on Wednesday, with 261,319 antigen and PCR tests reported in the past 24 hours. Of those, 44,222 were PCR smears, and the positive rate was 4.5 percent. The 2,006 new infections were offset by significantly fewer newly recovered people – 1,334 more people survived infection. The number of confirmed active cases increased by 636 to already 17,559 people.

Meanwhile, the number of sick people receiving hospital treatment declined. Overall, there were 39 fewer patients in hospital on Wednesday than on Thursday, with 1,323 beds occupied. There was also a decrease of 15 Covid 19 sufferers in intensive care units. Across Austria, 256 people needed intensive care. That was eight fewer than the previous week.

The number of deaths increased by 36 to already 8,470 people who died from or with Covid-19. Within the past week, 180 deaths were recorded. An average of nearly 26 more deaths occurred per day. Per 100,000 population, 95.2 people have already died from or with Covid-19.

As of Tuesday evening, 535,870 vaccinations had been entered into the electronic vaccination record, 16,532 more than the previous day. Both doses have been received by 209,000 people. Thus, 2.3 percent of Austrians have been immunized.

Throughout Austria, there have already been 450,376 confirmed infected people since the beginning of the pandemic – that is about five percent of the total population. 424,348 people have survived infection. Most new infections were reported Wednesday in Vienna, with 533, Lower Austria added 337 and Upper Austria 337 new cases. Styria had 201 more infected, Carinthia 149, Tyrol 146 and Salzburg 142. Burgenland reported 97 new infections, Vorarlberg 46.
