The death of a 49-year-old nurse from Lower Austria after a coronavirus vaccination has repercussions. Because remaining stocks of the same batch are no longer vaccinated, numerous vaccinations had to be canceled at short notice on Sunday.

The woman died ten days after vaccination with the Astra-Zeneca vaccine. Now the vaccination with the batch number ABV 5300 was stopped by the federal government. Vaccine from other batches can continue to be administered, the state says. However, because remaining stocks of the same batch are no longer vaccinated as a precautionary measure, vaccinations had to be canceled at short notice on Sunday.

Batch also delivered to Carinthia and vaccinated
According to the state’s vaccination plan, teachers and health personnel were to have been vaccinated on Sunday. But in the morning at the Klagenfurt exhibition center, several vaccinators were sent away again. The reason given was that they could not be vaccinated because the vaccine doses came from the same batch that had been used to vaccinate the deceased nurse. Gert Kurath, Corona spokesman for the state, confirmed: “Part of the batch that is now affected was also delivered to Carinthia and also vaccinated. By order of the Federal Ministry, this was stopped in Carinthia. All people who are now falling over for their vaccination will, of course, be vaccinated from another batch as quickly as possible.”

Currently no evidence of causal relationship
The state’s coronavirus commissioner also stressed, “There is currently no no direct connection between the vaccination and the tragic death of this woman. Nevertheless, the Ministry has pulled out all the stops to investigate this woman’s death. As soon as we have more detailed information, we will share it.”

The letter from the federal ministry to the affected states, “Currently, there is still no indication of a causal connection with the vaccination. Based on the known clinical data, a causal relationship cannot be established because thrombotic events in particular are not among the known or typical side effects of the vaccine in question. In the clinical data, even according to current knowledge, there are no data or signals of concern in this regard compared to placebo. The immediately initiated international analysis of adverse event reports also shows no clustering of similar case reports to date.”

AGES sets up hotline
For those people who were vaccinated with the vaccine from the affected batch and have questions about it, a hotline is to be set up by the Agency for Health and Food Safety. As soon as the telephone number is known, it is to be available on the state’s website.

It is not yet possible to say how many people in Carinthia have been vaccinated with the batch of ABV 5300 in question. It is also unclear how many people affected on Sunday have not received the CoV vaccination after all. The number is still being determined, said Kurath. On Monday, there is to be a meeting of the vaccination committee.

Currently, all necessary investigations are in full swing with the involvement of the respective experts, in order to be able to completely exclude a possible connection.
