Vienna – So now it’s official what experts had predicted – and it happened even faster than thought: according to the new data from the Ages, the delta variant determines the covid infection incidence in Austria.

Sequencing for the 25th calendar week (through June 27) shows that of the 421 samples examined so far in which the alpha, beta, gamma and delta variants were detected, the delta variant already accounted for 234. That is 55.6 percent. In 186 samples, the alpha mutation, which had been dominant for months, was detected.

The samples sequenced so far for the 26th calendar week (up to July 4) confirm the trend: for this period, 66 percent (specifically 163 out of 247) were already accounted for by the more contagious virus variant, which is likely to be the first mutant to establish itself globally. The long dominant alpha variant was comparatively confirmed in only 83 samples. Gamma (P.1) was confirmed only once more in this calendar week ending July 4. Beta (B.1351) has virtually disappeared: There has not been a single confirmed case with this mutation since mid-June.

Majority affects eastern Austria
In total, 970 probable and confirmed cases with the delta variant have been detected in Austria so far, based on PCR testing methods or by sequencing. The vast majority affects eastern Austria. Possible background for this: Vienna is also where most PCR testing is performed.

There were 617 delta cases in Vienna, followed by Lower Austria (139), Tyrol (55), Vorarlberg (38), Salzburg (37), Styria (34), Upper Austria (24), Burgenland (21) and Carinthia (5).

24 more delta cases in Lower Austria
In Lower Austria, the number of new Delta infections has recently increased by another 24 cases. This was announced by the office of Health Regional Councillor Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig (SPÖ) on Wednesday. Among the new cases are also four travelers from Russia, Spain and Hungary.

The average age of those in Lower Austria infected with the variant is almost exactly 30 years.
