Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) warns in drastic words against a further spread of the Corona pandemic in Austria. “What we are currently experiencing is the beginning of the second wave. The number of infections is increasing from day to day”, said the ÖVP leader in a written statement to the APA. He made an “urgent appeal” to the population to stick to the measures.
“Whereas two weeks ago, the number of infections per day was around 350, yesterday it was already over 850. The development is particularly dramatic in Vienna, where around 50 percent of all new infections in Austria are recorded. And we will soon reach the mark of 1,000 new infections per day,” the Chancellor expects.
“I ask the population to comply with all measures, to reduce social contacts, to wear mouth and nose protection and to keep their distance everywhere as well as possible,” Kurz appealed. Overall, however, the head of government stands by his assessment expressed at the end of August that there is light at the end of the tunnel – and also that summer will be largely normal again next year. “But it will be a tough fall and winter for all of us. That is why we are all now called upon and challenged to master the challenges of the coming months together, with the same discipline and consideration as in spring.
