“The Covid 19 pandemic has shown in the most dramatic way how interconnected and interdependent we are.” This message was conveyed by Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) yesterday by video at a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN at the General Assembly in New York. No country can fight the pandemic or solve other global challenges alone.

International cooperation with the United Nations at its center is of crucial importance, Kurz emphasized in the text of his speech. “The United Nations was born from the ashes and destruction of the Second World War.

Since then there have been “75 years of commitment to multilateralism”, “which have led to remarkable successes of which we can all be proud. Kurz gave the following concrete examples: “A strong human rights system, peacekeeping, the international disarmament architecture, Agenda 2030 and its goals for sustainable development and leadership in the fight against climate change.

Focus on “young generation”
As a “young leader”, he is pleased that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is also focusing on “how young people see the future of the United Nations”. After all, it is “the young generation that will shape the multilateral order of tomorrow”.

For Austria, 2020 was a special anniversary year in relation to the United Nations, Kurz recalled: “It is 65 years since we joined. 60 years since we first contributed to peacekeeping operations and 40 years since Vienna hosted the third of four UN headquarters worldwide”.

Austria remains a committed advocate of the United Nations and effective international cooperation, the Head of Government assured the meeting. “We are proud of the contribution we have made so far and stand ready to support all efforts to make the United Nations fit for the next 75 years”.
