Until now, the USA and Brazil have been considered the countries most affected by the pandemic. However, in terms of population, the situation in Argentina is now more dramatic. Observers warn of a social apocalypse – with worldwide consequences.
It is a week of terror for Argentina: When the daily death and infection figures are announced on Wednesday evening, they reach dramatically high levels as in the days before, with 424 deaths and 12,624 new infections. Converted to the population, Argentina has thus long since reached the dimension of other global corona hotspots.
So far, the world has been looking mainly to the USA and Brazil to determine which countries are particularly badly affected by the pandemic. But in the shadow of these two giant states, one country is unnoticed as one of the biggest corona problem countries: Argentina. If the corona cases and deaths in this country of 45 million inhabitants were extrapolated to the Brazilian (211 million) or American population (328 million), the daily death figures would be 1988 and 3090, respectively, which are significantly higher than those of the global hotspots known to date.
For the dramatic corona figures are only one side of a catastrophic development. The other is the crash of the Argentine economy. Also on Wednesday new labor market figures were announced: With an unemployment rate of 13.1 percent, the country slipped to the crisis level of 2005. Less than 24 hours earlier, another piece of negative news had been announced: The gross domestic product plunged by 19.1 percent in the second quarter. Observers fear that Argentina is facing a social apocalypse.
