The effective reproduction figure for Austria is below 1.0 for the first time since 10 August. 0.99 additional persons were infected by an infected person on average, as can be seen from the calculations of the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) and the Technical University of Graz. “The number of newly diagnosed cases every day is still at an increased level”, was however stressed in the update published yesterday afternoon on the AGES website.

Few cases – large fluctuations
The period under investigation was September 17 to 29. The estimated daily rate of increase in new infections was minus 0.6 percent for September 29. In some federal states, the number of newly diagnosed cases was very low, which is why fluctuations in the reproductive rate should be interpreted with great caution, the experts emphasized.

In Burgenland, Carinthia and Salzburg, the effective reproductive rate is above 1.0, but the update said that there is a tendency of decline towards one. In Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria and Vienna the value is around 1.0 and in Tyrol and Vorarlberg it is significantly lower.

Daily 600 to 800 new cases
A reproduction count of 1.0 means that each case triggers another new infection. Thus, theoretically there is a constant number of new infections every day, i.e. an endemic spread of the virus.

However, the AGES pointed out that the effective reproduction number does not say anything about the level of the daily case numbers. These had recently settled at an “increased level” with 600 to 800 new infections per day.
