Geneva. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in ten people in the world could already be infected with the novel coronavirus. “Our current best estimates indicate that around ten percent of the world’s population may already have been infected with this virus,” WHO expert Mike Ryan said in Geneva on Monday.
This would correspond to an unreported number of more than 700 million undetected infections in addition to the 35 million cases detected to date. The proportion of those already infected varies by country, between urban and rural populations and also by social groups, Ryan said.
Even with such a high number of undetected cases, the overwhelming majority of people worldwide are still at risk of Covid 19 disease, he stressed. To what extent people who have survived an infection with sars-CoV-2 are immune to the pathogen, at least for a while, has not yet been conclusively clarified.
