Brussels. The EU Commission has reserved 500,000 additional doses of the corona drug Remdesivir from the US pharmaceutical manufacturer Gilead. The 27 EU countries as well as Great Britain, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and six Balkan countries could now apply for the funds in Brussels, the authority explained on Wednesday. The drug under the brand name Veklury is to be used for accelerated recovery in severe corona disease.
The antiviral preparation Remdesivir received conditional marketing authorization for the European Union in early July in a fast-track procedure. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommends Remdesivir for the treatment of adult corona patients as well as adolescents from the age of twelve years who suffer from pneumonia and need oxygen.
Delivery of a first order of more than 33,000 doses of the drug started in August. The drugs, worth 70 million euros, were thus financed by Corona emergency aid from the EU budget and distributed among the member states and Great Britain. The Commission did not initially provide any information on the financing of the new order. US President Donald Trump, who is infected with the novel corona virus, was treated with Remdesivir, among other things.
