Within only 24 hours, 4,058 new corona cases were reported.

The number of new coronavirus infections recorded in Germany is rising rapidly. Within one day, the health authorities reported 4,058 new corona infections, as the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Thursday morning. That is 1,200 more than the day before.

The RKI warned in its status report of Tuesday evening that it is necessary for the entire population to commit itself to infection prevention. At present, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days in Berlin and Bremen is very clearly above the national average in Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse. According to the report, case accumulations are currently being recorded in particular in connection with celebrations with family and friends, as well as in old people’s and nursing homes, hospitals and various professional settings. The proportion of travel returnees from abroad has fallen significantly.

According to RKI data, since the week from August 31 to September 6, the proportion of older population groups in the new infections has been rising again. Correspondingly, an increase in the number of Covid-19 patients undergoing intensive care treatment is becoming apparent. According to the current RKI report (as of 6.10., 13.15 hrs), 449 corona-infected patients are currently undergoing intensive care, 219 of whom are ventilated. One week ago (29.9.) the value was 352 (195 ventilated), the week before (22.9.) 278 (151 ventilated). Around 8900 intensive care beds are still available in German hospitals.

For comparison: On April 18, when the number of new infections recorded was 3,609, 2,922 people received intensive care treatment and 2,180 (75 percent) were ventilated, according to RKI data. In April, there had been considerably fewer tests for SARS-CoV-2 than now, and especially mild to symptom-free infections were recorded less frequently.

According to the RKI, at least 306,086 people in Germany have been demonstrably infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the corona crisis (data as of 7 October, 0:00 a.m.). According to RKI data, the number of deaths in connection with corona infection is 9,562, 16 more than the day before. According to RKI estimates, around 267,700 people have survived the infection.

According to RKI estimates, the reproduction rate, or R-value for short, was 1.15 in Germany according to the management report on Tuesday (previous day: 1.21). This means that an infected person infects more than one other person on average. The R-value reflects the course of infection about one and a half weeks before.

The RKI also gives a so-called seven-day R in its current situation report. This value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value was 1.08 (previous day: also 1.08). It shows the infection rate from 8 to 16 days ago.
