Doctors have observed new Covid symptoms in patients. The consequences can be dramatic.
The longer the coronavirus pandemic lasts, the more symptoms are attributed to Covid-19. If an infection initially seemed to have a similar effect to a common flu, the list of symptoms is getting longer and longer. Head, nose, throat, lungs, heart, kidneys, stomach, intestines and even the toes – there is hardly any area that is not affected by the virus.
Neurological symptoms
Scientists at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in the USA have now discovered that 80 percent of all corona patients also have neurological problems. “This is the first study of its kind in the United States,” said study author Dr. Igor Koralnik proudly. “Our research group spent the summer performing chart reviews on 509 patients admitted to hospital for COVID-19. Our results show that neurological problems are very common in these patients”.
According to the report, these were the most common neurological symptoms:
muscle pain (44.8%)
Headache (37.7%)
encephalopathy (31.8%)
Dizziness (29.7%)
Taste disorder (15.9%)
Odour disturbance (11.4%)
Dramatic effects
According to the researchers, encephalopathy is the most serious symptom. This is the collective term for pathological states of the brain. It can come thereby to confusion, memory loss and even slight personality changes. In the study the scientists state in addition: “After the dismissal from the hospital only 32.1% of the patients with encephalopathy could worry about their own affairs, compared with 89.3% of the patients, who did not develop encephalopathy. There was also a higher mortality rate in patients with encephalopathy (21.7%) compared to 3.2% in patients without.
