In South America and the Caribbean, more than ten million people have been infected with the coronavirus to date. According to a census by the AFP news agency today, 10,001,833 cases have been officially reported since the beginning of the pandemic. More than 366,600 people have died. The region is the most affected by the pandemic in the world in terms of the number of deaths.

More than half of the reported cases occurred in Brazil. More than 149,600 people died in the country after coronavirus disease. Colombia, Argentina and Peru followed. Although Mexico has recorded fewer cases, it has the fourth highest coronavirus death rate in the world – with 83,507 victims at present.

However, experts suspect a high number of undetected cases in the region. Many countries lack testing capacity, which is why only symptomatic and particularly severe cases are often tested.
