600 students have become infected with the coronavirus on the university campus of the Belgian city of Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve according to media reports. This corresponds to a share of two percent of the students enrolled there, as reported by the VRT television station.

“We have done a lot to sensitize students to the consequences of their behavior, but it has not helped,” said the university’s vice director, Philippe Hiligsmann, VRT. The university’s Anne-Sophie Masureel also emphasized that students in the lecture halls adhered to the rules of distance and the obligation to wear masks. Masureel suspects that infections occurred mainly in the students’ free time.

In the region near the capital Brussels, there is currently a night-time curfew between 1:00 and 6:00 a.m. Exceptions are made, among other things, for urgent medical reasons and for daily commuting.
