Yesterday, a record number of new infections with the virus was recorded. 1346 cases were fed into the reporting system, whereby the number was then reduced to 1335 in the course of the day, because eleven cases were wrongly assigned to Wolfsberg in Carinthia instead of Sopron in Hungary. But neither at the beginning of the month nor at the peak of the lockdown were more cases registered! 402 persons were reported in Vienna, followed by Upper Austria with 234 cases and Lower Austria with 139. The winter sports mecca Tyrol also remains a corona hot spot: 184 infections were recorded in the province. In Salzburg there were 134 cases. Least new cases were recorded in Vorarlberg (77), Styria (62) and Burgenland (42). Within 24 hours, eleven deaths due to the virus were reported between Lake Constance and Lake Neusiedl.
The first Covid-19 wave caused a total of 206,000 deaths in 19 European countries, including Austria, as well as in Australia and New Zealand, an international team of researchers calculated. The coronavirus itself caused 167,000 deaths, the others were victims of the concomitant circumstances. According to the study published in the journal “Nature Medicine”, there were 930 additional deaths in Austria, 668 are attributed to the novel coronavirus.
