For weeks the coronavirus numbers have been rising, on Saturday a new peak value was recorded for new infections, and for the first time since the spring, Kuchl in Salzburg is a community under complete quarantine.

The situation forces the government to act. On Monday, Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz – together with Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler, Health Minister Rudolf Anschober and Interior Minister Karl Nehammer – announced nationwide tightening of the regulations:

Meetings starting from Friday, 0:00 o’clock are massively reduced: For private meetings, only a maximum of six (adult) persons are allowed to meet indoors and a maximum of 12 persons outdoors.

That applies “everywhere”, so Federal Chancellor short, “in the restaurant, with the Yoga course, in the dance school, with the birthday celebration, with the wedding, in association locations.

“Professional events” are now only permitted with assigned seats and a mouth and nose protection obligation during the entire event. The number of persons is also limited here: 1500 persons are allowed outdoors, 1000 persons indoors. Food and drinks may no longer be served.

Further measures can still be decided on a regional level, says Kurz: This applies, for example, to an earlier curfew, a local alcohol ban, restrictions in the education sector or regional quarantine measures.

The most important thing, however, is still one’s own behavior, said Kurz. Many are already doing their bit. “But some ignore the measures and cause much of the damage. Kurz has no understanding for this at all.

Shortly before the press conference, the Federal Government had coordinated the measures with the state governors during a video conference. Kurz had also already addressed the population on Sunday with a Facebook video and warned them to reduce private meetings and refrain from parties.
