The Hague. In the Netherlands, 8,182 new corona infections have been reported to the health authorities in 24 hours. That is 170 more than the day before and a new record, as the Institute for Health and Environment RIVM announced on Tuesday. The Netherlands is one of the countries in Europe most affected by the second wave of the corona pandemic.
However, the curve of new infections is rising less rapidly, the RIVM announced. A total of 55,587 new infections were reported last week, 27 percent more than the previous week. In the weeks before, increases of around 60 percent per week had been recorded. 6,814 people have demonstrably died of the virus. On October 13, a partial lockdown was imposed in the Netherlands and, among other things, all restaurants were closed.
The number of patients in hospitals and intensive care units is also rising rapidly. Almost every third bed in intensive care units is occupied by a Covid-19 patient. In the meantime, patients are already being distributed to other hospitals. Hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony had also offered to accept patients from the Netherlands.
